In the 1970s, Park Forest was an idyllic middle-class suburb: • Big affordable single-family homes • Large families and white picket fences • Park district baseball and real Americana community life By the 1990s, after a barrage of Section 8 housing vouchers, everything changed: • Rising crime and more evictions • Failing schools and dirty parks • Plunging home values and families moving out Today, only 16% of kids in Park Forest read at grade level. 16%.
